Dr Lisa Cameron MP, Chair of the Disability All Party Parliamentary Group in the House of Commons has become one of the few Level 2 Disability Confident Employers leading the way on disability inclusion in Parliament.
Lisa has this year also convened a number of workshops for cross party MPs Offices to help them become registered as Level 1 as Disability Confident Employers and has raised the percentage of MPs who are Disability Confident from 11% to just under a quarter of the parliament pledging to sign up in 2021.
The Disability All Party Parliamentary Group have been focusing on Access to Elected Office for Person’s with Disabilities throughout 2021 and are currently undertaking an Inquiry into best practice that constituents and organisations can provide evidence to by contacting Dr Cameron’s Office.
In July, Dr Cameron asked the Prime Minister to become a Disability Confident Employer and received a positive response. She also raised the matter with Minister for Disabilities who said “The Hon Lady has been an absolute superstar in her role as Chair of the All Party Parliamentary group on Disability. She organised a brilliant event to incentivise, encourage and cajole MPs from across the House to lead by example by signing up to be Disability Confident Employers and we saw a huge increase in the number of MPs who are signed up. She is absolutely right to keep pushing because collectively we can make a difference and she has personally led on that”.
Lisa said “I am delighted to support people with disabilities into employment and to ensure that experience of politics and parliament. We must do all possible to ensure that opportunities are available to everyone and believe that MPs should lead by example in offering work experience placements and internships wherever possible”.
